Lost in the Garden
Lost in the Garden Dear government leaders, I am writing to emphasize the critical importance of implementing a comprehensive school food security program. As stewards of our nation's future, we bear the responsibility of ensuring that every child has access to nutritious meals, regardless of their socioeconomic background. A school food security program not only addresses immediate hunger concerns but also lays the foundation for lifelong health and academic success. By providing consistent access to wholesome meals, we empower students to concentrate on their studies, foster their physical and cognitive development, and cultivate healthy eating habits that extend into adulthood. Moreover, such a program contributes to a more equitable society, mitigating the detrimental effects of food insecurity on vulnerable communities. Therefore, I urge your support in prioritizing and funding initiatives that establish and sustain robust school food security measures, thereby enriching the lives and futures of our nation's youth. Canadian students demand for their communities to have access to clean, nutritious, and affordable food, and believe that the effects of climate change have a large impact on Canadian food security. COP28: Renewable Energy Sources in Egypt
Renewable Energy Sources in Egypt Dear Minister, The Earth is getting worse day by day due to our decisions, and one thing to think about is energy. COP28: Local Student's Concern about Lack of Climate Education
Local Student's Concern about Lack of Climate Education There's a serious lack of education when it comes to climate change. Because it's our job to fix it before it's too late. Created by: Sara

COP28: We Are The Future
We Are The Future We are the future of this world and without the ability to make that change we need to the future will be doomed. If the future generations are led blindly to their doom they will never escape the labyrinth of their demise. The hubris of our leaders will lead us to an inevitable fate. We have flown too close to the sun and without the wings of our youth we will never be able to fly again. There is no water to break our fall and no safe return to the cliff from which we took flight. The kids of today will one day lead and their voices must be hear because they are smart, they are strong and they are our future. And without them, there is nothing. We Are. Created by: Benjamin S

COP28: Learning and teaching about the environment
Learning and teaching about the environment It is very important that in schools, for example, children are taught about the consequences that could happen in the future if our world is not well looked after. In these teachings, children must also be shown how to avoid climate threats and guarantee a future for this generation. At my school in Brazil (Colégio Magno) we have a lot of sustainable education, which aims to introduce various sustainable practices into our school environment, as well as showing students the importance of this at all times. COP28: There is no second earth
We as a society have to realise that there is no second chance and that there is a point from where there is no return. And that point is closer than we could imagine, soon we may never be able to return to the way we were and our planet will be doomed forever. Only by educating and listening to the youth can this future be prevented. Created by: Kentaro S.

COP28: stop and talk
stop and talk In Australia many of our population have been afraid of talking about climate change or out right ignoring concerns. For example in The Australian bush fires, Our Prime Minster at the time fled to Hawaii for a holiday while the east coast of Australia was in flames. Australia's hesitancy to do anything about climate change has shown due to them not following the Paris accords so far. Not investing in climate education, and many more. Sea Monster My artwork seemed from a project at a Decarbonize conference, where we were asked to decorate our shirts like enviromental protest signs. My shirt is meant to spread awareness about the pollutants destroying our beautiful oceans. In mythology, monsters are always serpents or krakens, but the real monster is the plastic trash that is contaminating our sea life and aquatic ecosystems. My art was based off sextions of a very similar set of ads depicting sea life and garbage with the same title of Sea Monster. Which Choice?
Which Choice? 48% of the world's population experienced at least 30 days of extreme heat this summer. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change will cause an additional 250,000 deaths per year. Almost 5 million hectares were burned in Canada in 2023 due to forest fires (Editor's note: this was by early June, 2023. Over 18 million hectares burned in Canada in 2023 due to forest fires.) By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Solar panels are becoming cheaper and more accessible! Addressing global warming could help lessen the harms to the ecosystem! Alert: New Message
Alert: New Message To: @ City of Edmonton . ca Subject: We think that the City of Edmonton should be more aware of where our waste is going. It has come to our attention that many citizens are not using their compost bins properly, or not at all. We believe that this could be a result of citizens simply not understanding the importance of composting. This is why we are writing to ask that the city implements programs to help raise awareness. Organizing our waste is very important and if everyone in the city actually did what was asked we could make a big difference. Photo Description: Our photo represents how waste often converges into one big pile, even when compost, recycling, and garbage should be separate. How is OKM helping fight climate change?
How is OKM helping fight climate change? Hi, I’m a student here at OKM and my name is Meg and I'm in grade 12. I just attended a climate conference hosted by Extreme Hangout and #Decarbonize. We had many guest speakers come up and talk, and I was really inspired by what they said. It made me realize that OKM is not doing enough to fight climate change! We have a large student body of over 1400 people, and with that many people I think we can really make a difference, but only if these students are educated, guided, and advocated for. The many people who spoke today proved to me that students are capable of accomplishing amazing goals and projects. Imagine what all the other students of OKM could do for our community and environment too! That’s why I’m asking you to set plans to embed more climate change topics into our courses, and do things like bringing in guest speakers to educate us about how to become a climate leader and impacts of climate change. And maybe we can put forth an after school climate education program. Here is a link to Lacombe High Schools Ecovision project, a project led entirely by students that a speaker introduced to us about the power we students can hold: http://lchsecovision.weebly.com/past-projects.html. Even though it is student led, advocacy and inspiration (which is where you come in) is the first step to meaningful change. Created by: Meg B. School: Okanagan Mission Secondary

The Climate change problem in Canada
The Climate change problem in Canada Dear Mr. Trudeau, My name is Humzah K. I am writing to you addressing the rise of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Now I know that you and the government are aware of this problem and trying to solve it but if we want to make a real change and impact then we need to start trying harder so that we can resolve this problem or at the minimum reduce it. I think that seeing how us Canadians are contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect and climate change, we should make it mandatory to stop relying on fossil fuels and to rely on more renewable resources like solar panels and electric cars. Now I understand that this will be very very costly but we should forget about the money for a minute and focus on saving our planet because if we don't start taking more action then the future of Canada and the whole world will not be guaranteed. I also think that this would help with some of the problems the Indigenous communities are facing like lack of clean water and food. For example, in the Northwest Territories higher temperatures are negatively affecting the people in the area by the global temperatures rising. Fewer animals are migrating and it is becoming really hard to grow traditional plants in their lands. Created by: Humzah K. School: Elsie MacGill Secondary School

Climate Change
Climate Change I'm concerned about two issues caused by climate change. Glaciers are melting and this impacts people living in low-lying areas because as sea levels rise, there are more storm surges. So I am asking you what you're doing for that issue? Also, droughts will impact farmed crops and lead to loss of income for farmers, increased food costs for consumers, and increased stress levels for everyone. In conclusion, I want to know what you're doing for climate change and if you are helping, how will it help? Created by: Darrien L. Public Awareness Campaign
Public Awareness Campaign Dear Mr. van Koeverden I saw that there was a tornado warning for Milton in the summer of 2022. I am very concerned about this as climate change is getting worse and I was hoping as my Member of Parliament that when you speak to the Prime Minister that you would share that climate change is getting worse and that the government should take action. More heat is being trapped in the atmosphere now causing unpredictable weather, and leading to more natural disasters and people dying from heat stroke. I feel that your government should start a public awareness campaign to let people know about climate change. I didn’t know about climate change before I started this work in Geography, and now I care about it more because I know. I hope that other Canadians will care about climate change once they become aware of all the problems. Created by: Aria W. Time is Running Out: The Urgent Call to Action on Climate Change
Time is Running Out: The Urgent Call to Action on Climate Change Hello, my name is Ahyan S. and I am 14 years old. I'm passionate about fighting against climate change and would like to collaborate with you guys to spread awareness and take action at my school. As you may know, climate change refers to the long-term changes in the Earth's climate caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, which is really sad and bad. That is why I am on a mission to fight against climate change, with your organization's help. I believe we can make a difference by setting up booths at my school to educate our peers, teachers, and school administrators about the causes and effects of climate change. We can also organize events like seminars, workshops, and campaigns to raise awareness and encourage people to take action. One important step we can take is to reduce our carbon footprint by using energy-efficient light bulbs, reducing plastic waste, and using public transport or carpooling. We can also encourage our schools to adopt sustainable practices like installing solar panels and using renewable energy sources with your help! I'm open to any more ideas that you may have and would love to collaborate with you. If you have any information or ideas you can share with me to take to my principal, I would appreciate it! Deforestation causes drought & wildfires in Canada
Deforestation causes drought & wildfires in Canada Dear Prime Minister, My name is Mahnoor T., I am currently a grade 9 student from Milton Ontario. I have always been interested to discuss various topics about Canada, including issues and the best reasons why Canada is a great place to live. While living here, I have seen multiple changes throughout the years of my life. Not only Ontario itself but I have learned a lot about how climate change is impacting other parts of Canada in various ways. Climate change refers to long term changes in temperatures and weather patterns around the world. These changes can be natural but can also be caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, energy consumption, deforestation and more. From my learning, deforestation is causing rising temperatures and this is the major reason why wildfires occur. From my research the three main provinces in Canada that have had the highest rate of wildfires are British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. British Columbia had about 1635 forest fires, Alberta had about 1342 forest fires and Ontario had 1198 forest fires. All of this took place during the year of 2021. According to the Western Fire Chiefs Association website, reducing tree cover and ground vegetation dries out the forests, causing a greater risk of wildfires and drought to spread. Trees help sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which is caused by burning fossil fuels mainly from transportation. In this case clearing land (grass), plants and trees is not only affecting wildlife but also affecting us by causing global warming. Causing an increase in flooding, fewer crops and loss of habitats for animals in Canada and around the world. From my research in the last 40 years Canada has lost about 3.3 million hectares of forests which were used to make paper, raise livestock, and urbanization production. After all of the learning and research that I have done, I personally think that you can help Canada to reduce the amount of wildfires by reducing the amount of deforestation and land removal. I thought of a terrific idea and decided to tell you about it. My idea for you is to discuss and develop various goals and jobs within the campaigns that have already been started. I know that there is currently a campaign called Tree Canada. Tree Canada has taken the action to plant trees in urban environments in every province across the country, which is great. But from my research they haven't thought of using another material other than trees in order to create paper. Using another material other than trees to create paper such as stone can help reduce deforestation. Stone paper is made from pulverized construction rock, this requires less energy than making regular paper and also produces less air pollution and solid waste. Without plants and trees we would not be able to survive. This would occur because we would lose essential functions for life on earth. But if we all work together and take action towards deforestation in Canada, I’m sure that together we will be able to reduce climate change and create a healthy and sustainable future for the next generation! Kind regards, Mahnoor T. Created by: Mahnoor T. School: Elsie MacGill Secondary School
A Student Wants You To Protect Our Greenbelt
A Student Wants You To Protect Our Greenbelt Dear Premier Ford, My name is Abby I., and I am a grade 9 student. I heard about your plan to build highway 413 through the Greenbelt. Although this would provide more routes for transportation, It would benefit our Earth if the environment was kept in mind during this project. Every year, humans release 37.12 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Luckily, in Ontario, we have protected farmland and forests to take in this CO2 and give us oxygen to breath. If the super highway is built, a lot of this valuable nature will be destroyed, leaving more carbon dioxide in the air. Along with this, there will be additional greenhouse gases that will be emitted from the machines used to build and the new vehicles on the road. We are also taking away habitats for many creatures like birds, and fish. Keep in mind, according to The Greenbelt Foundation, the Greenbelt generates $9.1 billion annually in economic activity through recreation, agriculture and tourism, and creates 161,000 local full time jobs that support rural economic activity. In the end, I and many others in my community believe that the last thing we need is more damage to our environment, especially in such a thriving and protected area like the Greenbelt. Please rethink your idea to build this highway in order to represent Ontario as a province that doesn’t contribute to global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. Thank you ! - Abby Created by: Abby I. School: Elsie MacGill Secondary School Illustration Credit: Jeannie Phan (www.jeanniephan.com)

Taking A Shine to Solar Energy
Taking A Shine to Solar Energy Solar energy is the solution to so many of today’s problems. Electricity and all kinds of energies are very expensive, whereas solar energy is paid for when installed and never thereafter. Since nobody owns or controls solar power, nobody gets paid for it, so all that the consumer pays for is the installation of the panels. Plus, solar power is natural, renewable, and non-polluting, which is a very useful, and green alternative to fossil fuels. Pollution is a constant worry to most a lot of people, so this is one way to keep the air pure. Another great thing about solar power is that it is available all over the world, because the sun goes up and comes down everywhere in the world. And yes, it is available at nighttime with the help of some sort of energy storage system. Solar panels are very interesting devices, they are made from two wafers, one positive, one negative, and some fine wires in between. These panels use Photovoltaic (or PV) energy. PV cells are most commonly made from a special kind of silicon. In the form of sand or quartz, silicon is one of the most common elements found on earth. But how does it work? The sun shines onto the solar panels and causes electrons to travel between the panels and make power for us to use. It sounds simple, right? Well, that’s because it is! So is there anything really stopping you from using solar power? After all, it’s renewable, non-polluting, and there are no overtime costs. Go green! Go solar! Created by: Chris P School:

Aware Of Air
Aware Of Air Dear Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Do you ever wonder what our world would be like without air pollution? Well, I do and I think it would be a safer, cleaner, and simply a better place for all of us to live. Although it can be fixed, the world will never be the same again. I think air pollution is a very important issue and a serious problem for our environment. It is a fast growing problem and we need to fix it right away or our future will be very sad! You might think that air pollution is not that big of a deal or that it is not that bad right now, but if you thought that, you would be very wrong. You might also think that air pollution isn’t affecting you, but wrong again! Air pollution affects our eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. It can also get into your airways and into your blood stream. Once air pollution enters the blood stream, it can affect any number of physiological systems. Air pollution doesn’t only harm people, but it is also bad for other living things that we share our planet with like our animal friends, plants, and basically the entire ecosystem. Air pollution makes our planet very sick. The human health problems due to poor air quality are very serious, but mostly affect the body's respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollution a person is exposed to, how much pollution, and how good or bad the person's health is. People who exercise outdoors, for example, on hot and smoggy days have a better chance of being affected by pollution. The health effects caused by air pollution may range from difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing and aggravation of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions. These effects can result in more medication use, more doctor or emergency room visits, more hospital admissions and even an early death! These health problems will not only affect you, but it can affect your children, grandchildren, and even THEIR children and so on. The problem can affect your family and mine for generations to come. Air pollution is slowly improving, but it is still not good and we have a long way to go. If it doesn’t improve, it will continue to negatively affect human health, the environment, and the economy more than it is now. There are many ways we can help to reduce air pollution. We can help by chaning the types of transportation we currently use. Car exhaust is very bad for the environment, so one way you can get to work is you can ride a bike. It is not only helping the environment, but it is good exercise and good for your health. If your work is very far, you can car pool. Also, there are many other types of transportation you can use like walking or taking public transit. We can also help in our homes. You can change your old light bulbs and replace them with energy efficient light bulbs. They save energy (and money) which means energy companies don’t have to burn more fossil fuels that will go up into the atmosphere. If energy companies burn less fossil fuels, there will be less need for smoke towers so you can get rid of some of them. We can also help by changing our habits when we use our air conditioner and furnace. When we are home we can set our air conditioner or furnace setting to 21˚C during the day. Then, when no one's home or we are asleep, we can set the temperature so we use even less energy. There are many other ways to improve the air quality and there are many other reasons why air pollution is bad, but I think that is enough to get started with! If we do these simple things, we can have a very big impact on air pollution and an even bigger impact on our future! Created by: Ally A-P School: Green Public School

Thinking Outside the Box
Thinking Outside the Box As I am making my way towards the half-way mark of this expedition, I am truly beginning to grasp the importance of this voyage. The voyagers, the ship’s crew and the staff have all helped me to open my eyes to our current global situation. This experience has not only altered my outlook on climate change, it has helped me to look at my entire world under a different light. After visiting a small community at the base of one of Greenland’s incredible snow covered mountains, I realized how unfair global warming is. The entire community amounts to about eighty of the most inspiring people I have ever met. They are not in any way materialistic, nor do they have the opportunity to be. The few toys and games that the children have are greatly appreciated, and the three computers they have in their school are eagerly shared. This small community has a nearly non-existent carbon footprint compared to mine and those of all Canadians. This is the part that is so unfair; they and all other small communities in Greenland will be the first and hardest hit by climate change if we do not do something about it. Playing with the kids and getting to understand their way of life made me passionate about changing the fate of our earth. It is time for all of us, especially us Canadians, to step up to the plate, look outside of our suburban bubbles and save the North where these people have been living for ages! Climate change is affecting us all!
Climate change is affecting us all! We have caused this global issue, so we need to stop it. Sometimes we don't realize it until one day when the coastline cities are flooded, arctic animals and plants are GONE. We as humans need to step up and take charge so climate change doesn't take over the world. We need to educate people all over the world about the effects of their actions on the planet. Also so they can take a stand and try to change their daily lives and routines to help this global issue. Climate change is something that will our future generations if we don't try and change it quick before its too late! Have you ever wondered why arctic glaciers are melting, sea level is rising, oceans are getting warmer? It's all because of us, humans. We are killing so many plants, animals and our silly actions that we don't even realize are hurting our planet. What are greenhouse gases? Greenhouse gases are gases that are released into the air when we burn fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are burned when we drive our cars, factories and electricity. What role do they play in climate change? Greenhouse gases are playing a role in climate change because the greenhouse gases form a layer a round the earth, which stops the heat from escaping the planet. Which cause the temperature on earth to rise. The climate all over the world is getting warmer every day. When the climate gets warmer that's when global warming starts happening. Why is this affecting our planet? This is affecting our planet because lots of people, plants and animals are suffering. In the arctic when the temperature gets warmer glaciers start to melt. Did you know 10% of arctic ice has melted over the last 25 years. Which affects polar bears, penguins and other arctic animals because they won't have a place to live. Climate change also affects the probability of natural disasters. It increase the chances for floods because the sea level is rising with all of the glaciers melting which cause flooding for coastline cities. Also climate change causes more and heavier rainfall. It also increases the chances for heat waves and droughts where some people have a shortage of water and food. 262 million people died from climate change related disasters in 2004. Climate change also affects animals and people because in the arctic the animals who live there need a cold climate and when the climate becomes warm animals will die because they won't be able to survive. This will also affect people because the people who live in the arctic can't grow food so they rely on the animals as a food source and when the animals die so will some people. Another reason why it will affect people is for farmers because if the climate gets warmer they won't be able to grow their crops because they will die when it is too warm. Why has Canada's gas emission risen while other countries have decreased? Did you know 2% of the worlds greenhouse gases are from Canada. This is because as a nation we haven't done much to try and decrease our greenhouse gas emissions. While other countries were working hard to raise awareness and to decrease the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we let ours rise by 25%. I also think it is because we have a growing population and a growing economy. Other countries have been able to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions because some of them don't have as many factories or people that are driving cars, buses and trucks. As a nation we haven't focused much on helping this global issue. We need to try our best to help as a country decrease our greenhouse gas emissions. What can I do? Individually • Walk as much as we can because cars emit 28% of our greenhouse gases • Use less aerosols such as hairsprays because there are gases inside the can that when the product is spray those gases go into the air Families • Buy local produce because it requires the burning of fossil fuels to transport the good from another country to your supermarket • Use appliances such as heater, dryers and fridges as little as we can • Change daily rountines • Recycle becuase gases are emitted hen you burn waste Nation • Inform people on the impacts of climate change and greenhouse gases so that will influence them to try and help • Make laws on how much waste you can throw out per week YOU NEED TO BE THE CHANGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THIS WORLD!!
